We want you to be an excellent surgeon. This means that you will engage in early and extensive hands-on experience to develop surgical and decision-making skills. At Sinai Chicago, you will practice in a busy Level 1 Adult Trauma Center, allowing you to develop superior skills in the treatment of acute trauma and advanced general surgery.
We are committed to fostering a culture of inclusion where residents are free to express themselves with regards to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and other aspects of their identities. We want you — the whole you — to feel comfortable showing up. We strive to support our residents holistically — not just academically or professionally. All residents also have access to our Under the Rainbow Program at Mount Sinai Hospital for mental health support.
Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs, and one-on-one instruction are all an integral part of Sinai Chicago’s General Surgery Residency Program. All residents attend weekly Thursday Morbidity and Mortality conferences and Grand Rounds. Monday morning sessions from internal and external clinical leaders cover didactics, simulation, and surgical skills. Separate sessions are held several times a year in a surgical simulator.
The General Surgery Residency Program also provides the resources, training, and development you need to become a successful surgeon. Some of these opportunities include:
- Certification in laparoscopic (FES), endoscopic (FES), trauma-related (ATLS) skills, and ASSET (advanced surgical skills for exposure and trauma)
- UIC-sponsored Core Curriculum modules dealing with topics such as professionalism, teaching skills, ethics, and medical finance
- Monthly Trauma Lectures
- Monthly Interesting Case Presentation
- Monthly Journal Club
- Access to UIC Gateway — for journals, books, and other resources
- Rotations at nearby institutions, such as Loyola, Northwestern, St. Alexian Brothers, and UIC
