Our Pharmacy Department provides evidence-based, cost-effective, and safe drug therapy, targeting optimal patient outcomes; diseases that impact the community (heart failure, diabetes, COPD, and asthma) are a focus of the general medicine, transitions of care, and ambulatory care rotations. In the Pharmacy Residency Program at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, the PGY-1 pharmacy resident can gain experience in areas that include general medicine, critical care, emergency medicine, NICU, oncology, ambulatory care, informatics, and pharmacy services management.
The faculty includes six pharmacy specialists in the areas of MICU, SICU, Oncology (2), Pediatrics (in NICU), and Emergency Department; additionally, experienced general medicine pharmacists, managers, and coordinators are on staff. Expectations of the resident include formal presentations to pharmacists, physicians, medical residents, and nurses; authoring pharmacy newsletter articles; conducting MUEs; mentorship of pharmacy students; and development and presentation of a major project.

As part of Sinai Chicago, Mount Sinai Hospital is a 320-bed community teaching hospital with a Level 1 Trauma Center and a Level III NICU. Located on Chicago’s west side, Mount Sinai Hospital offers an urban healthcare experience that enables pharmacy residents, in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, to benefit a population that is generally underserved.

Welcome to Mount Sinai Hospital’s pharmacy residency program! Our legacy includes 50 PGY-1 and PGY-2 residents that have graduated our program. Over the past 10+ years, our pharmacy department has transformed from a distribution-focused model to a direct patient care approach, now integral to each hospital unit. Our team of over 30 residency-trained, board-certified pharmacists excels in specialized areas like critical care and emergency medicine, delivering evidence-based, collaborative care to ensure quality patient outcomes.
With cutting-edge technologies — such as EHR EPIC, wireless smart pumps, DoseEdge™ IV workflow management, and Omnicell™ automation — and a strong operational infrastructure, our residency program offers a unique, comprehensive training experience.

The residents of Schwab have each others’ backs. Seriously. We learn from each other, sharpen each other, and are ultimately aiming for the same finish line — the highest possible level of independence for all patients.
You get an allowance for books, a stipend to present at conferences, fees paid for BLS certification, and time off to attend conferences. Plus, residents attend grand rounds and teaching rounds, anatomy/kinesiology lecture series, lunch and learns, and a wide array of other training opportunities. This training focuses on topics like:

In addition to the residents’ clinical experience, attendance at a regular series of didactic lectures is required. Residents are required to meet the ABPMR Educational Requirements and the ACGME PMR Milestones. The didactic lecture series is typically given by physiatrists, other physicians from related fields of medicine.
There are also be opportunities to train at nearby facilities including University of Chicago, University of Illinois, and others across the country and globe.
And, we have a discounted medical Spanish class.
You are a person, not a machine. We can’t expect you to care for patients if you’re not taking time for yourself. At Schwab, the Chief of Wellness organizes resident activities, like the family picnic and mental health and wellness speakers. We also have the employee assistance program for mental health support when it gets tough.
The partnership with Sinai Urban Health Institute allows you to learn more about — and act on — the health disparities and inequities within our Chicago community. Interested residents can benefit from these research and outreach opportunities, while making a difference in their own education and in our city.

PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency
Mount Sinai Hospital’s PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency program is a broad, comprehensive pharmacy practice experience that prepares residents for multiple professional challenges and career opportunities. Four PGY-1 positions are available; the residency’s inaugural year was 2010 and expanded from two to four positions in 2013-14.
Qualified applicants apply using PHORCAS. Each completed application must be absolutely complete and submitted by January 3rd, 2025, in order to be considered.
Program Details
Mount Sinai Hospital’s PGY-1 Residency Program equips residents for various professional and career opportunities. Upon graduation, residents can competently practice in a variety of pharmacy roles, continue training in a PGY-2 program, or serve as adjunct preceptors. Pharmacy residents further benefit from a $58,657 estimated stipend, health insurance, paid time off, lab coats, and professional travel reimbursement (IC [“Required Rotations” drop-down item] HP, MCM, and Illinois Residency Conference).
- Current residents of Mount Sinai’s PGY-1 pharmacy residency program are prepared for multiple professional challenges and career opportunities through diverse learning opportunities and training, set in a socio-economically disadvantaged area typically underserved by healthcare. The clinical functions of pharmacists are incorporated as a key component of clinical practice at Sinai Chicago.

PGY-2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency (HSPAL)
Mount Sinai Hospital’s PGY-2 HSPAL residency program provides hands-on experience in areas such as operations, medication safety, pharmacy enterprise, clinical practice management, healthy system administration (with VP or senior leadership), and mentorship.
Sinai Chicago’s PGY-2 in Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership was ASHP surveyed for full accreditation on Nov 14-15, 2017. We are very proud to report that we were accredited for 6 years through 2024.

Program Details
- This residency is designed to provide a comprehensive experience in health system pharmacy administration. The Sinai Health System includes four hospitals, two research institutes, and a medical group which is composed of 18 clinical sites across Chicago.
- Our mission is to develop future progressive pharmacy leaders through a curriculum full of coordinated practical experiences involving all of our expanding pharmacy services. Mount Sinai Hospital’s PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency program is a broad, comprehensive pharmacy practice experience that prepares residents for multiple professional challenges and career opportunities. One PGY-2 HSPAL position available.
